Fish CrowScientific name: Corvus ossifragus Very similar to the American Crow, the Fish Crow is expanding its range northward and thus presents some new identification challenges in many places. Fish Crows sometimes nest relatively close together if nests sites are hard to find. While incubating eggs, the female Fish Crow is fed by the male. Fish Crows commonly eat the eggs of nesting herons, and an increase in heron populations has been suggested as one reason for the Fish Crow’s population expansion. Federal protection from casual shooting has also likely played a role. (Follow the links on the left for additional information.) |
