Brandt's CormorantScientific name: Phalacrocorax penicillatus Limited in range to the Pacific Coast of the North America, the Brandt’s Cormorant, like its relatives, is a strong swimmer and uses its feet for propulsion underwater. Less adept at flight, Brandt’s Cormorants need a running, splashing start across the water to become airborne. Brandt’s Cormorants don’t typically breed until they are three or four years old. Males are more likely to return to the same nest site in subsequent years. Though unusual, Brandt’s Cormorants have been known to live over 18 years in the wild.
